Terabithia
Thursday, January 28, 2010

Before Leslie came to Lark Creek, I had simple desires....I wanted good drawing supplies and to be the fastest runner in the grade...however...after I met Leslie, everything changed...my attitude....my thinking...everything.....I admired Leslie's bravery and became more courageous due to her....I actually stood up to Janice Avery...without her, I could have never created Terabithia....I am eternally grateful to her, she opened my world and showed me many things that I could not have discovered by myself.....Thanks Leslie...where ever you are.....

This is 1 of a few short letters that I wrote to the Burkes after "The Accident". I will post the rest as soon as possible.

10 old Perkins Place
#01-103

2 January

Dear Mr and Mrs Burkes,

How have you been? Hopefully, all of us will be able to get over what recently happened. I am writing to you as I have always regarded Leslie as my true friend and I would like to tell you what had Leslie done that I have changed my life.

Leslie has always been a very understanding girl even when we were only classmates or when I behaved childishly and refused to be friends with her just because she had won me in running. I gave her the cold shoulder as I was mad about losing. However, I soon warmed up to her kindness and her friendly attitude. Nobody is ever perfect but in my eyes Leslie was.

Well, I hope you reply soon. I have many things to talk to you regarding about Leslie.

Yours,
Jesse Aarons

Recently, Mr and Mrs Burke send me a box of Leslie's belongings. Inside the box, I found a few poems and songs that Leslie wrote. I decided to post them here. Here is one of my favourites:

A Beautiful World
The world,
A fragile yet beautiful place,
Fragile as it is ever changing,
Beautiful as it is always evolving,
A place full of hope,
Also a place full of hatred,
Full of different things with different thoughts,
No matter how it is,
Will always remain beautiful in my heart and eyes
I love this poem and hope you will too.

This is an interview I found on the newspapers with Gary Fulcher about Leslie.

Interviewer: How do you feel about Leslie's death?
Gary Fulcher: I was stunned and I'm sure Jesse is too.
Interviewer: Who is Jesse?
Gary Fulcher: Jesse was Leslie's good friend and they are always seen together.
Interviewer: What can you say about Leslie?
Gary Fulcher: Leslie was the fastest among the fifth graders in Lark Creek Elementary.
Interviewer: Were you friends with Leslie?
Gary Fulcher: No, I don't make friends with girls.
Interviewer: Why not?
Gary Fulcher: Most of them are arrogrant and bossy.
Interviewer: Did Leslie's death make a great impact on you?
Gary Fulcher: Not really because we aren't close.
Interviewer: Alright, thanks for letting us interview you.

I read the newspaper, Lark Creek Times, the day after "she" died and found an article about "her".

Leslie Burke
A girl aged ten named as Leslie was found in the creek this afternoon. The police suspected that it was because of the old rope that she swung on had broke. Moreover, it rained in the morning causing the water level of the creek to rise and strong water currents that mught have swept the poor girl away.

Despite the fact that she can swim well, she did not managed to save herself. It might be the cause of the bump on her head, resulting in a severe damage on her head. The strong currents caused by the rains may also be the cause of her unconciousness. Upon hearing the death of Leslie, her family and the Aarons whose only son, Jesse Aaarons is a close friend of the deceased were in total disbelief, judging from their expressions. I send my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and hope that they will get over it as soon as possible. This was a really unfortunate accident and no one was to be blamed for it. May Leslie, a young and spirited girl rest in peace.

By: Carrie Wilson

This is a really meaningful article. Leslie's death was an unfortunate incident indeed but no one was to be blamed for this.

....A very tearful accident happened today...When I was spending a good time with Miss Edumunds at Washington, Leslie went to Terabithia alone and she never came back.....Nobody know what happened to her and they went there to try and find her but all they found was a broken rope that was hanging from an old crab apple tree....with this, they suspected that Leslie was trying to swing across when the rope broke and she dropped into the river...Leslie was a certainly a good swimmer but she was no match against the strong currents that were formed because of the recent rain...whatever happened...the police and investigators were sure that Leslie was......DEAD. When they said this, it was a great impact...and I did not believe at first but after a period of time, I began to accept the truth...my one and only true friend, Leslie was....gone from the world....

Its been raining for quite some time and the rain haven't stopped. Not wanting to forget aout Terabithia, Leslie and I still went there. We put on our boots and Leslie got me a coat to put on from Bill. Thanks for that coat , Bill and Leslie!

We ran to terabithia in the rain and it felt so thrilling and fun!

man.. I was a coward at that time too... I did not really dare to swing the rope that led to terabithia, though I eventually plucked up my courage and did so. Then we asked for blessings from the Terabithia spirits to stop the evil spell which made the rain unstoppable. Leslie, you are so brave!!

Went to the Church today for Easter and Leslie as a free-thinker tagged along too. Why would Leslie find it interesting to go there in the first place? Churches are boring!! my two elder sisters were making lots of noises over what to wear to the church.. Vain!

after that we went home. *sigh* Why must everyone prejudice Leslie? even mum does the same.. she felt that Leslie might made us embarrassed...ridiculous.

oh yes! and May Belle did a very naive thing by telling Leslie that she must be a christian or God will damn her to hell, stubbornly. HaHa! Then Leslie and I tried to ignore May Belle's silly comments by smiling to each other, though little May Belle's voice went on and on....

Helped Mr Burke today in repairing his house today. Mrs Burkes was busy writing her book while Leslie was doing the hunting and fetching for her father. Leslie was suitable for this job because Mr Burke was quite absent-minded.

i helped in the repairing because i did not want to go home and do chores for mum or play barbie with May Belle-- I am a boy okay?

i feel quite proud that Mr Burke praised me of my knowledge, haha! Then, had some fun singing and listening at Leslie's house.oh yea, and the living-room was painted gold! it was a perfect combination with the sunrays during late afternoon.

then, leslie,P.T and I went to Terabithia and dealed with many imaginary foes! that was fun !! okay thats all for today

Sorry people, its been some time since I blogged because I was busy during that period of time. Its near Christmas now and my two sisters are already going crazy over what to buy for their boyfriends, and what gifts they are receiving. I got quite angry with Brenda because she insulted Leslie!! She is a pure loser if she were to be compared with Leslie be it , character or looks.

Well, I have polled in all my money for buying May Belle's doll and I can no longer buy a gift for Leslie. Luckily, during the time I was pondering on the way home, I happened to see some puppies in a basket at a nearby shop. They were stated free and so, I decided to adopt one of those puppies and give it to Leslie as Christmas gift.

Thanks Leslie that she appreciated my gift when I gave the puppy to her in Terabithia. And of course, the art materials she gave me.. I Love them!!

We also assigned the puppy a role of a guardian at terabithia and named it ''Prince Terrein''. Had lots of fun playing with it... <3

Today, Janice went showing off to everybody about her love letter from Williard Hughes. Unbelievable right?! Everyone began gossiping on the bus about Janice and Williard.

like what everybody thought, that letter is just a prank! It is not very surprising that people would play a prank on Janice, given her having bullied so many people. okay! thats all for today

On the way to school,on the bus, May Belle's twinkies that Dad bought for her got taken away by Janice and her company. This is what happened....

May Belle was showing off her Twinkies to Billy Jean on the bus at the top of her voice. She was too naive to realise that Janice Avery, the bully, would take away her things if she were to ever know about that. I told her to shut up but she did not listen and continued with her nonsense. Its not my fault anymore since i have already warned her before that. As what we had thought, May Belle's twinkies got taken away by Janice during recess , which May Belle sobbed over her precious.

I feel torn between having to protect my sister and my own instincts telling me to stay out of this problem. Luckily Leslie helped me by promising to get revenge for her but in a different way other than fighting her. I feel fortunate to have a friend like her...Don't worry May Belle...I will surely help you to get back at Janice...

This is a map of Terabithia that I've drawn.

written at 2:56 PM;

It started out as a normal Friday....nothing special..I love Fridays and was always looking forward to them as I could not wait for Miss Edmund's music class...Before music class, I had met her in the hall and she spoke to me about my pictures...That is what I like about her, she does not think that drawing is a waste of time and instead that I am a talent...During her class, I decided to be friends with Leslie...I did not know why, it just suddenly occurred to me.."Why not?". On the same day, we created Terabithia...The bridge was just a rope hanging from a crab apple tree but to me, it was a magical pathway to a place I love.....

This was just a start of my adventures with Leslie, my true friend....who left me with unforgettable memories.

GRR!! today is such a bad day for me!! guess what? Leslie is in the same class as me!! like yesterday, she wore like a tomboy to class and everyone stared at her, while Mrs Myers fretted over where to place Leslie's desk.

During recess, we went for race . I nearly won the race you know!! All thanks to Leslie that all my training and efforts made to be the fastest runner in fifth grade went down the drain. Leslie beat me in the race!!

Disappointed and feeling angry, i tried all ways to avoid Leslie on the way home...

Not to forget, i also had a quarrel with Gary in class......today was really not my day...hope that tomorrow will be a better day...being angry is not a very good feeling....

That day was just like any other.....it started off as a perfectly normal day like any other.....

Woke up early in the morning as usual to do 1 of my favourite thing.........run....As usual, I put my best into my running and end up with me sweating like a mad bull.....when I finished running... I sat down on the hard ground and tried to cool myself down.....all of a sudden, a person appeared in front of me, sitting on the hard fence....I stared at her like she was an alien from outer space...I knew it was rude to stare but I could not help myself, she or he had jaggedl=y, brown hair that was cut close to her or his face. "It" wore a blue shirt with faded jeans cut off above the knees......

"It" spoke to me and introduced itself as Leslie Burke. Her or his name did not make it easier to guess her gender as the name could be either a guy or a girl. I was really creeped out about "its" appearance and of course gave an excseuse and started to run back to my house.....

That was the day I met her...

When I woke up today, i thought of not going for training because I was certainly too tired!! Still, i persevered to achieve the target i set for myself.

while training , heard someone calling me. That person was sitting on the fence and had jaggedy brown short hair , and wore clothes like a boy. He somehow looked like a girl and i seriously could not tell his gender. Then i learnt that she was called Leslie. Wow? that is a boy's name!!

after that went off to do my work. Thats all. bye!

Nothing much happened today... I went to train sprinting this morning as normal... to achieve my wish as the fastest runner in the fifth grade.

After the running, I went to milk Miss Bessie and heard May Belle calling me to eat first before continuing with the chores. Aww, sometimes i feel that only May Belle is concerned about me....

As usual, I got insulted by Ellie's sarcastic remarks... Never mind about that, I am used to it. While drinking the coffee, Brenda complained to mummy that I stank! How can she ever do that?! Its always I doing all the chores and she is the one always relaxing!! She should be thanking me!!

Next, I went to bathe and heard Mum giving Brenda and Ellie money to do their shopping. Well, I don't really care about that because I do not like shopping anyway...

Suddenly, May Belle told me that she saw people moving to the Old Perkins place... Poof.. A new neighbour . hope they are nice people. =]
